Self Image
A major contributing factor to becoming a successful and influential leader is having a comprehensive self image. Self image is how we view ourselves. This view of ourself heavily impacts our self worth. A leader needs to have a positive sense of self worth because those they are leading will see that confidence and respect the leader. Something I learned in this Emerging Leaders course is that in order to have complete self image we do need to acknowledge where we fall short. Those flaws are not hinderances, rather they are opportunities to ask peers for assistance and offer an opportunity for personal growth. A leader is open to this adaptation knowing it is the best way to fully serve and direct those under their guidance.

Taking Initiative
Ability to take initiative is a key element in strong leaders. This is what effects whether a person will lead or follow a group. In ELA, we had multiple discussions about when and why people choose to lead. I tend to be a leader in most situations, but I am more comfortable leading people I am familiar with towards a goal I understand and support. However, there are many opportunities which give me the chance to grow in this skill, to take the lead even when I am not totally confident in my ability to do so. My degrees in Criminal Justice and Psychology will present many challenges as I learn to take over and direct other people as well.

Connecting with Others
Connecting to other people is something important in any career path, but it holds exceptional significance in fields which are in the business of helping people. Combining my knowledge of the justice system and Psychology equips me with skills beneficial for building connections with others. I know I possess a great capacity to listen to other people and offer advice if asked. I aim for a career that allows me the opportunity to guide people through some of the most painful experiences in their lives. Having someone there to listen and answer questions can make a considerable difference on how the victim processes and overcomes the trauma.

Team Building
A true leader will not be successful by functioning in accordance with their solo agenda and point of view. An impactful leader is supported by a team. All members of that team want to work towards the same goal and operate with mutual respect and creativity. I have always enjoyed group projects. Every person has a perspective or suggestion to offer. If a leader were to silence members who do not agree with them they are not actually leading. The leader should emulate the importance of inclusion because the group takes the cue from their leader. When everyone is heard, the task is more successful and the participants enjoy the work they are a part of.

Personal Reflection
A leader must stay true to who they are. Part of that is holding on to their values and beliefs. They keep all those principles in mind while sticking with the goals they aim towards. It is also of utmost importance to remember that simply because they may hold more responsibility, leaders are not infallible. Leaders need to take the time to reflect on mistakes made or how their weaknesses are impacting the good of the group. Followers want to see their leader being willing to learn and grow in order to be better. This maintains good relationships between follow and leader, as well as keeping the working atmosphere effective and professional.
